CPS Newsletter: August 2015

Fort Collins, Colorado @ KFNL: Bruce Cohen offers his review of the 2015 CPS GTG Fly-In!

Another Late Spring/Early Summer. Another highly anticipated and successful Cessna Pilots Society Annual Get-To-Gether (GTG) has come and gone. Each year a member of the CPS bids to volunteer host our group at a destination fly-in event. We try to alternate Eastern Seaboard with Western Seaboard, but 2015 was a bit different. We did move westward, but stopped at the foothills of the Colorado Rockies, holding our 2015 GTG at Fort Collins, CO. (KFNL) from June 24th through June28th, hosted by Steve Wolf. What an excellent location and event we had this year! This venue combined the sheer natural beauty of the Rockies, the challenges and accomplishments of mountain flying, an excellent airport at which we based the event, and a multitude of adventures, tours, dinners and “informal hangar meetings” both on field and at the various venues we populated over the course of the fly-in.

CPS members and families arrived from across the United States and Canada, some in their own aircraft, some flying in commercially, but all with one goal: to rekindle personal relationships, friendships, and just plain hanging out with each other in a setting which agreed with us all. Our hotel accommodations at the Embassy Suites just across the Interstate from the field offered a truly superb experience. It was hailed by many as the best hotel we’ve stayed in over the years of our many GTGs.

The Colorado Pilots Association offered us a special Mountain Flying Course for early arriving pilots, which included a full day ground school followed by another full morning of mountain flying through a circuit of high elevation airports in the heart of the Rockies, culminating in a stop at Leadville, CO, the nation’s highest elevation public use field.

Our actual fly-in began with a welcome dinner on Wednesday, June 24th hosted by the JetCenter FBO at KFNL, and we offer hearty thanks to the entire staff at Jet Center for their hospitality and excellent service while we visited Colorado.

During the remainder of our stay, activities selected by various folks who attended included a Colorado Rockies Baseball Game, Hiking Tours through the Front Range of the Rockies, Soaring at Owl Canyon, a mini-fly-out to Cabela’s in Sidney, Shopping and Touring the local towns and a brew festival in Ft. Collins over the weekend. The two premier events quite possible were our driving tour through the entire breathtaking Rocky Mountain National Park and our Friday fly-out and drive-out to Salida, CO (KANK) for a luncheon graciously hosted at the field there by CPS member Dan Downing and his wife.

The finale of every GTG is our Saturday evening Banquet and once again the JetCenter staff stepped up and provided their hangar as our venue for the banquet, which was catered by Main Street Catering in Loveland, CO. Delicious food was enjoyed by all. Our after dinner raffle drawing for sponsor donated prizes was a hoot, and there were some seriously valuable prizes given away that evening. Our thanks go out to all the sponsors who provided the prizes and support for Cessna Pilots Society. To be sure, we do indeed patronize the various vendors and manufacturers of aviation related items provided to our group.

Thanks again to Steve Wolf for hosting our 2015 GTG and for a job well done! Safely home, we look forward to our next GTG when we can once again rekindle in person our friendships, camaraderie and shared love for flight.

Incorporation:

To our fellow Members…
The current Board (actually the past three Boards) have wrestled with the issue of incorporating CPS in great detail and depth. After much research and at least one ‘extra large’ bottle of Excedrin going to good use, we are pleased to inform everyone that the Cessna Pilots Society, Inc. is now incorporated as a legal entity.

We have discussed the needs and necessity of this step over the years, but thought to offer a synoptic review of the logic behind the often difficult choices.

Please read the Official announcement on the Forums for more information: HERE

First hello from "Corporate": Fellow members, the newly seated Corporate Board is understandably in the midst of sorting out their organizational duties as well as tending to the innumerable details that go with establishing any corporate entity.  Your patience as we get established is greatly appreciated.  We look forward to providing you with a detailed update in the next NOTAMS.

Upcoming Events:

SEPT. 9-13 TRIPLE TREE FLY-IN (SC00):

Once again CPS will have a group camp site and a presence at this extraordinary event. Imagine a 7000 ft groomed grass runway, as smooth as a golf course. In fact, Triple Tree is often referred to as the "Augusta National" of grass airfields. AOPA is ramping up their presence there this year as Mark Baker will be present Friday night for the "Taste of Triple Tree" buffet and then hold a Pilot Town Hall on Saturday morning. Mark says he intends to camp and of course, since he is a CPS member, we've invited him to join our campsite. Chris Eads, Director of Outreach and Events at AOPA, also a CPS member, has already accepted the same invite. NOTE: There ARE nearby hotels and rental cars available. You do not HAVE to camp!

AOPA REGIONAL FLY-INS:

Anoka MN August 22, 2015: Scott Johnson headed the charge and few the CPS Colors at the Anoka AOPA Event. Following what has fast become a tradition, Scott is the latest in a line of CPS volunteers exhibiting and showing off a a bit with a member's aircraft on display in each of these regional events. Scott had us covered this weekend and his cherry 182 got a lot of looks. Scott was not alone as Bill Dean drove down from northern MN to help man the booth (great to see Bill Dean, lots of knowledge between those ears), and a couple of the East Coast crowd managed to head a bit west to pitch in. Please join in sending Scott and the boys a hearty thank-you for advancing the CPS cause.

More CPS / AOPA events:

These are always fun events that give CPS a lot of exposure and publicity. If you are based anywhere within a reasonable flying distance of either of these remaining events, don't miss the opportunity to wave the CPS banner!

SEPT. 26, COLORADO SPRINGS, CO (COS) CPS HOST is STEVE WOLF:

Steve is looking for a couple folks to help share the event. Sign on to the website and read along at the link below. Volunteers welcome!

AOPA info on the event is available here: AOPA Link

OCT. 10, TULLAHOMA, TN (THA) CPS HOSTS are WALT AND LISA FRANKEWICH

Not based that close or just want to make a weekend of it? Consider arriving Friday afternoon in time for the "Barnstormer's Dinners". AOPA has a complete list of hotels in addition, at Tullahoma, on site camping under the wing will be featured. These Friday night events, originally run by CPS, have become very popular sponsored events. Don't miss 'em!

Rumor Mill:

An East Coast Montauk Fly-In is being bantered about by the usual suspects. Tune in to the Destinations Forums from time to time. The late summer/early fall CPS gathering at Montauk Point is just a day flight for some fun on the beach (you walk to the beach from the tie-down area!) and a fun lunch at Crazy Rick's Pokey Cowboy Restaurant (might have that name wrong) across the street. Really low key and lots of fun. The chance to view your fellow CPS Members in their bathing suits is truly entertaining. Great times. Stay in touch as this event develops.

Tappahanock Fly-In. Greg and Pat Invite a few friends over for lunch

So Greg and Pat Wright decided to invite a few CPS folks down for the day on 8-15-15. Local airport KSXA was having a combined car-show and Fly-In. BBQ w/ a Southern twang, cars restored by loving hands are a close parallel with CPS pilots as the fact is most of us are flying 'Classics', and we certainly can respect the effort that goes into keeping a classic in top form.

Things got a little out of hand. The airport initially expected a couple hundred people. Things spooled up and estimates were close to 2000 folks happened by XSA that day! We had a blast, and as usual, Pat and Greg were wonderful hosts. Full discussion on the forum and lots of pictures if you click on this link: Day out at KXSA

Thanks to the Wrights for their hospitality. We have already warned them we're coming back again next year, same time, same place.

‘NOTAMS’ is the newsletter of the Cessna Pilots Society.  “CPS” is an all-volunteer group of aviation enthusiasts who maintain a forum for the unofficial exchange of ideas relating to technical, operational, and functional issues relating specifically to Cessna aircraft.  We provide a venue whereby the members may also choose to discuss destinations, and other subjects that touch on the aviation lifestyle.  No political discussions are permitted. The daily workings of CPS are overseen by a Board of Directors that also moderate the forum if needed. We also welcome members that fly other brands who wish to participate for the friendship, and unique access to a diverse set of good minds.   Dedicated owners, operators, AMT’s and all aviation enthusiasts are welcome at CPS.
