The Newsletter of your Cessna Pilot’s Society Volume III issue 4.0, October 2015
Welcome back to “NOTAMS”. This periodic newsletter is sent to Members of the Cessna Pilots Society to keep everyone informed of Society News, Gatherings, and interesting threads under discussion on our forums.
Whether we’re addressing a maintenance challenge, encouraging those seeking an enhanced rating, or planning that next big trip, the camaraderie and enthusiasm for flight that come from a participation on the forums adds to your enjoyment of aviation. We welcome you to join in. Registered members need just click on the links.
Late October 2015. The leaves are either changing or already becoming a slippery menace on your property. The air is downright crisp and if you are planning an IFR trip, awareness that ice may be lurking in the clouds is keeping you ever vigilant. Good time to take a moment to review cool weather strategies and to re-commit to safe operations at all times of the year.
Your corporate staff has been busy getting organized. The first board meeting was held and the following officers elected: (Note, each officer has an equal vote on matters before the Corporate Board.)
President- Abbott de Rham
Secretary- John Matthews
Treasurer/AOPA Liason- Doug Oakley
We are currently in the process of finalizing some edits to the Corporate By-Laws, establishing a bank account, etc.; all the myriad of seemingly minor duties required to get the corporation off the ground and properly organized. It is important to note that it is our plan to be very low keyed. CPS "operations" will continue to be run by your elected Forum Board.
CPS has been supported by the generous donations of a few Members over the last nine years. As we have recently incorporated, we feel it only proper that everyone be given the opportunity to share in the financing of CPS. In that effort, we are asking that you consider assisting by writing a CHECK to help cover the ongoing operations and expenses of the website. It is hoped we can adequately fund CPS through donations. Thread discussion here: HERE!
Please take the time to do this now. Your fellow members are counting on you!
The vote is on and the decision is up to you. We have three great locations proposed, each with a warm and friendly host. The locations are as interesting and diverse as our membership. Have a preference, please make your choice known. Check out the proposed locations and vote early (cannot say often as Chicago is not on the list!). Visit HERE to review the potential 2016 locations and vote!
The New Member CPS sign up requests have seen a slight uptick in volume as a result of the Tullahoma AOPA event presence. Otherwise, 2 or 3 a week is the norm. Get out there and beat the CPS drum whenever you can!
Hard as it is to believe, the “Holiday Flying Season” is coming soon: Before you know it, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Chanukah, Kwanza, and New Year’s will be on us. With Holiday gatherings and families hoping to share some time, pilots may well feel time pressures to ‘complete the mission’. Please, always remember the only mission that matters is that your trips conclude safely. Don’t be pressured into a bad decision. Watch the weather, and more importantly, respect the weather. Have a Plan B in place. If you reserve alternate means of transportation in advance, the costs are not as dear as booking a flight at the last instant. While the weather is still good, we urge our fellow Members to attend to aircraft maintenance matters now, so as to be prepared for the challenges the onset of cold weather promises.
Sandwiched in-between visits by President Obama, the North-East CPS crew managed to horn in and have a great 'quickie' gathering in New Bedford MA. We had the excuse that Dan Barley had done the Iron-Butt trip in from the great state of California, and took advantage of that to grab us some air-time. Read about it HERE
Great weather (warm/clear skies), great airport, and a wonderful turn out saw us fill the private dining room that had been allocated to our use. One of the things that made the New Bedford event so much fun was the attendance of so many of the non-flying spousal units. Sharing these days with the non-pilot husbands and wives is special, and most welcome. To quote Doug Oakley, "The family is the support vehicle for the airplane". If your family is enjoying the airplane, you're doing a good job!
Always a fun time, Triple Tree is one of those events where you get to keep company with those special folks with whom you rarely have enough time to enjoy. The CPS Canopy saw many faces, welcomed some new friends, and again served as a rally point for all that is good in aviation. While folks came and went according to their needs and schedules, the tone of the Triple Tree gathering is always about the better facets of our avocation. Good folks in a good setting, surrounded by airplanes and immersed in aviation.
The TT staff was 100% on target and on point as usual. Facilities were spotlessly clean, the food was good and plentiful, and the TT experience is one YOU should enjoy at least once. Dan Barley of CALIFORNIA (second time we're calling out that name) on a southbound leg of a jaunt around the USA was one of the first to arrive, and one of the last to leave. What a terrific destination for the 'middle' of such an epic trip. Good music, the easy friendship, and a beautiful setting served as a backdrop to picture-frame a 7000' grass strip that welcomes everything from J3 Cubs to Thundering B-17's all day long. Quite impressive. TT Founders Pat Hartness and John Hartness both stopped by and spent a long while with us under the canopy, and we were joined at the CPS compound by AOPA's Les Smith who camped alongside and by the time he had left, was 'one of the crew'.
From breakfast under the tent the first day, till the last evening de-briefing beneath the stars and the CPS canopy, there are few events that can compare to the wonder of Triple Tree. There was some rain early, but smiles prevailed throughout (helped along by the beautiful days and nights that followed). A further de-brief canbe found HERE
Put this on your 2016 schedule.
Not content to rest on their success in hosting our 2015 Annual Gathering, Steve and Julie Wolf led the CPS crew in our presence at AOPA at COS. Judy Parish came in all the way from Moscow (USA Moscow) to help man/woman the booth. Read about it HERE
Lisa and Walt Frankewich headed up our AOPA partnership appearance at the event in TN. Here again, weather played a role but our CPS crew did not let that get in the way of the ground mission. It was 'couples and families', (and Fred Larson on a stag weekend) that so ably assisted with Tami and Jim Epting, John Matthews and sons, Pam and Phil Sprang, Heather and Keith Dorken. Read about it HERE
The Membership of CPS is well justified in taking a measure of pride for our showing at the 2015 AOPA events. Leadership, fellowship, and a real sense of community were the driving forces that saw our group attend and support events in MN, MD, CO, and TN. In each case, one of our own 'took the reins' in hand and stood up as a group leader. Airplanes were waxed, CPS Banners and canopies were positioned, and new faces were welcomed to our ranks at each opportunity. While weather would have dulled or even daunted lesser folks, your CPS Sisters and Brothers came out regardless of the weather and showed their mettle. A salute to everyone that showed up, helped out, or in some way supported those efforts. We are in your debt. We do expect and have already committed to AOPA to participate at the 2016 regional fly-ins as well so expect to hear more on those as the year progresses.
Following up on an opening gambit by Fred Johnson, Lisa Frankewich (second time that name has been called too!) has taken up the lead in getting our CPS Facebook Presence up to speed. Lots of pictures! If you “do Facebook”, please check in and we hope you ‘like’ our FB page! Stars and bars to Lisa for heading up this gig. https://www.facebook.com/CessnaPilotsSociety

‘NOTAMS’ is the newsletter of the Cessna Pilots Society. “CPS” is an all-volunteer group of aviation enthusiasts who maintain a forum for the unofficial exchange of ideas relating to technical, operational, and functional issues relating specifically to Cessna aircraft. We provide a venue whereby the members may also choose to discuss destinations, and other subjects that touch on the aviation lifestyle. No political discussions are permitted. The daily workings of CPS are overseen by a Board of Directors that also moderate the forum if needed. We also welcome members that fly other brands who wish to participate for the friendship, and unique access to a diverse set of good minds. Dedicated owners, operators, AMT’s and all aviation enthusiasts are welcome at CPS.
The Cessna Pilots Society is not affiliated or endorsed by Cessna/Textron Corporation or its subsidiaries. All Cessna model designations and models are the property/trademark of Cessna/Textron.
