The Newsletter of your Cessna Pilot’s Society Volume IV issue 4.0, August 2016
Welcome back to “NOTAMS”. This periodic newsletter is sent to Members of the Cessna Pilots Society to keep everyone informed of Society News, Gatherings, and interesting threads under discussion on our forums.
Whether we’re addressing a maintenance challenge, encouraging those seeking an enhanced rating, or planning that next big trip, the camaraderie and enthusiasm for flight that come from a participation on the forums adds to your enjoyment of aviation. We welcome you to join in. Registered members need just click on the links.
While each of our gatherings has had a very individual personality, the Maine event (main event?) was just off the chart fun. Lots of attendees, loads of smiles, and more memories of how the CPS family makes a difference in our aviation lives. Jane and John Marden took the ball and ran it end-to-end. Lois and Ham Marden opened their home to our group for our conclusion banquet and in fitting fashion, we were treated to a God-given sunset over the water that left everyone feeling good about life. We gathered round the firepit and talked late into the evening, no one wanting to say so-long.
Those that were there will hold it dear forever. Those that missed out should make sure they DONT SCREW UP LIKE THAT AGAIN! It was great, and we're thankful for the generous grace of our hosts. Pictures are all over the forum.
AOPA Fly-In at Bremerton, WA - 08/20/2016:
Lane Gormley leads the CPS effort at Bremerton:
Our next 'boots on the ground' profile raising event for CPS comes at the AOPA fly-in at Bremerton Washington on August 20. Lane and company could use a few helpful hands to assist in manning the CPS booth and display airplane. No pay, no t-shirt, scant glory, but you will gain the admiration and respect of your fellow Members for your efforts! Alright, so that's hardly a soft sell, but we do need you. It is a lot of fun as others that have manned these posts will attest. Contact Lane HERE
Montauk 2016 Gathering - August 21st!
Bob Vila is leading the call for the 2016 CPS fly-in to Montauk Long Island on Sunday Aug 21, 2016. Rain date is Aug 28. Montauk KMTP is a great field w/ easy walking distance to the beach. Re-paved a couple years ago, it is smooth and clean. We usually spend some time getting some sun and a swim, then head across the street for lunch before pulling up stakes. If you've been to this local gathering, you know it just rocks. Great time and a great destination for pilots and their families. Click in and sign on for a great time HERE.
Just an idea, a thought, and some good souls working for no reward other than the common good. Simple structure to keep things civil and cordial. Ten years ago this month... Member supported, all-volunteer. No one lining their pockets. Congrats to the entirety of the group, and for each of those who contribute in the spirit of friendship on which we were founded.

I started flying when I was 16 with the Civil Air Patrol, but have gained most of my hours the last 25 years or so. My wife developed an interest in Flying 15 years ago and after getting her PPL we purchased 1978 182Q in 2001. After 7 years of faithful service and reaching 2000 hours on the engine we decided to look for a another 182 with fewer hours on the engine and more advanced avionics. After 6 months we found what we were looking for and bought a 1997 182S in 2008.
Was fortunate to be able to fly around a 150 hours a year for the USCG Aux for a number of years around the San Juan Islands, Oregon and Washington coasts and a couple of hundred miles of the Columbia River on a weekly basis. The training provided and the opportunity to fly with high time pilots was fantastic. As relatively low time pilot (1800 hours) I was able to learn a quite a bit about flying with folks typically having over 10,000 hours. A third of my hours came from these flights.
As our kids have gotten older we are flying less to Soccer tournaments and more for breakfast, lunch or dinner on the weekends. In addition, try to fly at least one or two flights for Angel flight, Pilots N Paws, Challenge Air each month. Besides helping some folks out and it also affords me the opportunity to fly to some places I might have passed over.
This past year I volunteered for Lighthawk, a group matching up pilots with various conservation efforts. Several years ago I attended the McCall Mountain and Canyon flying course in Idaho and got a taste of flying in the wilderness areas. Many of the Lighthawk missions I have flown have allowed me to enjoy mountain flying again. Thinking my next airplane might be a 185, and perhaps some backcountry camping with my wife.
It was the thru Lighthawk I become involved with the Cessna Pilots Society. One of the CPS members was seeking to join Lighthawk and told me about the group. When we had our 182Q I pursued an alternative Cessna forum, and it was nice to see some familiar names I respected from those days were contributors at CPS. Much like my experience with USCG AUX, I enjoy being able to tap into the experience, knowledge our group provides. After flying to the Maine GTG and meeting some of members I am feeling proud to be a part of the CPS family.

Free Manuals: Cessna Corporate is continuing to offer parts manual downloads for many models on their website. We encourage you to download and safeguard a copy of these vital records so that you’ll always have them available. A thumb-drive kept in the airplane for use during your travels might be a good idea as well. Find the information here.
Summertime Flying: We all delight in the long daylight hours, the warm weather, sneakers, shorts and short sleeve shirts, the great destinations.... Summer flying also means high density altitudes and the performance losses that accompany such conditions. Weight and balance calculations need more than a cursory glance, and we always need to keep a steely eye cocked to the weather. Thunderstorms, days of low IMC, and the pressure of get-home-itis have taken some skilled pilots from our midst. Stay careful please.
Forum Board: The Forum Board Elections are complete and the new selectees are emplaced. Thanks for their service are earned and deserved to outgoing (legacy?) Members: Dan Barley, Bruce Cohen, Doug Oakley. Congratulations and thanks to Lisa Frankewich, Pedro Giralt, Mike Jesch, and Don Tedrow.
Special Thanks: To those that take the time to share experience and counsel on our forums. Your generosity of self sets the CPS standard.
That ties things up for this issue of CPS NOTAMS. See you in Bremerton, Montauk & on the forums.

‘NOTAMS’ is the newsletter of the Cessna Pilots Society. “CPS” is an all-volunteer group of aviation enthusiasts who maintain a forum for the unofficial exchange of ideas relating to technical, operational, and functional issues relating specifically to Cessna aircraft. We provide a venue whereby the members may also choose to discuss destinations, and other subjects that touch on the aviation lifestyle. No political discussions are permitted. The daily workings of CPS are overseen by a Board of Directors that also moderate the forum if needed. We also welcome members that fly other brands who wish to participate for the friendship, and unique access to a diverse set of good minds. Dedicated owners, operators, AMT’s and all aviation enthusiasts are welcome at CPS.
The Cessna Pilots Society is not affiliated or endorsed by Cessna/Textron Corporation or its subsidiaries. All Cessna model designations and models are the property/trademark of Cessna/Textron.
