Op Ed: Winter's Grip and a Pilot's Gripe
Winter weather can mean less flying.....
Cold, the need for a pre-heat, more cold, the threat of icing for those traveling IFR, all compound to make winter ops some of our most challenging. Maybe you were fortunate and only had to delay or refuse one or two flights. For some of us, we've been forced to sit idle on the ground sometimes for a couple weeks at a stretch.
While it is easy to dismiss a two week layoff as perhaps not impacting one's bag of flight skills, there may be times when two weeks removed is all it takes to remove the keen edge of currency. If you were ultra sharp current when you were forced to sit on the sidelines waiting for the weather to improve, you're likely good to go when the sun finally breaks free. If you were not perhaps as sharp as you might have been before sitting on the bench for a while, go forth when the weather breaks with special care.
Legal to fly is not the same as proficient. Keep your head in the game, and maybe get together with a good instructor or perhaps fly that first flight with a pilot friend who has been keeping sharp. Use good judgment as you hone those recently dormant skills.
Once current, get sharp! Find a day w/ some crosswinds and give yourself a workout w/ your favorite CFI. That razor's edge of talent that is your personal goal is within reach. Come Spring, you'll be the pilot everyone knows has been keeping sharp and potent. March 21st is just around the corner.
Hope to see you all at the GTG come June!

Free Manuals..
Marvel-Schebler/Precision Carburetors: Troubleshooting manuals and service bulletins for Marvel-Schebler carburetors were available free at the time of this posting. The Forum Board strongly recommends that you consider downloading the documents appropriate to your airplane to your permanent aviation library at your first opportunity.
Cessna Corporate is continuing to offer parts manual downloads for many models on their website. We encourage you to download and safeguard a copy of these vital records so that you’ll always have them available. A thumb-drive kept in the airplane for use during your travels might be a good idea.

These Manuals have gone through periods where they have become unavailable without notice.. The current link "https://support.cessna.com/custsupt/csupport/newlogin.jsp" seems to be up and running again..Your Forum Board will try to keep the links updated with your help. Please help us keep the Membership apprised .
The Forum Board again would like to emphasize the importance of securing your own personal download. Relying on off-site hosting for such critical documents may not be 100% reliable. We suggest you protect your interests by downloading a copy to your own personal aviation library.
Continental Engine Manuals: Continental has made available many engine manuals for free download. Your Forum Board encourages every owner/operator to take advantage of this resource.
Special thanks as always: to those that take the time to share experience and counsel on our forums. Your generosity of self sets the CPS standard.
